THE CIRCUS COMES TO TOWN…

Barnum & Bailey Circus is back in NYC. When they arrive, the elephants walk at night past my building. Every year crowds gather to see them. I also saw "the walk" for the fist time last year and was really upset about the whole thing. Such magnificent creatures should not be in circuses entertaining us.

From ASPCA newsletter:

"As Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus returns to New York City on Saturday, March 31, we want consumers to ask themselves: How does the circus really treat the animals who are part of its famed acts? According to new evidence, including inter-company emails and testimony from a former employee, the answer is downright shocking.

The ASPCA has teamed up with The Fund for Animals, the Animal Welfare Institute, and the Animal Protection Institute to make sure that circus elephants have their day in court. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is charged with mistreatment of its Asian elephants with electric prods and sharp “training” tools called bullhooks. The groups are joined in the lawsuit by Tom Rider, who worked as a barn man for the Ringling Bros. elephants for 2 1/2 years.

The ASPCA urges consumers not to go to the circus—unless it’s one that doesn’t feature any exotic animal performers. And please ask your friends, family and coworkers not to attend the circus, either. For more information on the cruelty that goes on in circuses, and what you can do about it, please visit ASPCA.org."

Some politicians in NYC are actually doing something about this:

"Council Member Rosie Mendez will join in to call on the City Council to pass her bill, Intro. 389, which aims to prohibit the use of wild/exotic animals in circuses and other performances throughout New York City. Thirteen other council members have already signed on as co-sponsors of the bill."

I really hope she finds a loving family.

Good News!

I was excited to see this in the latest issue of Time magazine.

I recently volunteered for local MEATOUT event promoting vegetarianism. One of the subjects addressed was the relationship between meat production and its influence on the environment. Village Voice wrote about our event in their VOICE CHOICE section and this is what they said:

"If you ever wondered what eating meat has to do with destroying the Earth, first think of the thousands of dairy cows, each producing 120 pounds of manure per day, and then imagine all their waste (containing toxic ammonia) contaminating river waters and stream ecosystems and killing already unpopulated fish. This is just one of many reasons to go vegan that you will hear at the Great American Meatout talk..."

In related news:

"The University of Rochester found men whose mothers ate a lot of beef during pregnancy had lower sperm counts.

The Human Reproduction study found they were three times more likely to have a sperm count so low they could be classified as sub-fertile."
